The aim of the project carried out within the Centre for Medieval Studies is to collect and share information about medieval seals related to the Polish lands. The long-term outcome of the work is to create a Corpus of Polish Seals, which will be an edition of sigillographic materials based on archival, library, museum and private collections, as well as seal descriptions contained in publications.
We currently present to you the results of the first of three stages of the project, planned for the years 2023–2027. Its goal is to gather and make available already published information about medieval seals associated with the Polish lands, as well as to conduct a preliminary survey of materials held in archives, libraries and museums. To this end, an IT tool suitable for collecting data and creating a repository has been developed. Initially, it collects information on seals already recorded in the scholarly literature, which will gradually – in subsequent stages of the project – be verified and supplemented on the basis of archival, library and museum materials, as well as expanded with descriptions of previously unpublished seals. Therefore, the repository currently contains materials drawn primarily from earlier sigillographic publications. According to the project creators, this is nevertheless a necessary stage in order to create a Corpus Sigillorum Poloniae that best meets the needs of sigillography. As this is an open project, the data contained in this repository are constantly being revised and supplemented.
We would like to draw the attention of our esteemed users to the “How to use” tab. Reviewing the repository’s user instructions will undoubtedly make it easier for you to benefit from the results of our work.
During this stage of the project, work also began on gathering materials for a bibliography of Polish medieval sigillography, which are available here.
